NZ housing statistics

The median rent for a new tenancy was $590 a week in July 2026, unchanged on a year earlier. House prices are falling in real terms: down 3.2% over the past year and 26.5% below their peak in the December 2021 quarter. In the year to August 2026, 41,268 new homes were consented, up 21.1% on the year before.

NZ housing statistics: missing data

We do not yet show house sales or completed homes. Stats NZ's property transfer statistics ended in June 2024, and New Zealand has no national count of completed homes, so consents are the main measure of new building.
