Updated
Estimated resident population of New Zealand at 30 June each year, from Stats NZ's population estimates. Used to calculate per-person figures such as government spending and debt per person.
Estimates, revised after each census (most recently the 2023 Census); earlier years in this series may differ from older publications. Includes people who usually live in New Zealand and are temporarily overseas; excludes short-term visitors.
Population estimates provide the denominator for many per person measures. Comparing totals alongside population helps distinguish a larger country from a larger amount available for each resident.
Read the period beside each number before comparing it with another figure. A monthly observation, a quarterly result and a financial year cover different spans of time. The latest release can also revise earlier observations. The chart and downloads keep the published periods so you can check which figures are being compared. A change in population describes what happened during that period; it does not by itself explain why it happened or identify the effect of a government policy. Definitions and coverage matter as much as the size of a change.
