Which region has the highest rent?

$650

Bay of Plenty had the highest regional median weekly rent for new rentals at $650 (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (Tenancy Services), Jul 2026).

Updated

The median weekly rent for new rentals in each region, monthly from tenancy bond records.

Smaller regions have few new rentals each month, so their medians jump around; use 12-month averages for trends. Dollars are not adjusted for inflation.

A regional rent can change when the mix of newly rented properties changes. The national median gives the middle rent across new rentals, with half above it and half below it.

Read the period beside each number before comparing it with another figure. A monthly observation, a quarterly result and a financial year cover different spans of time. The latest release can also revise earlier observations. The chart and downloads keep the published periods so you can check which figures are being compared. A change in rents describes what happened during that period; it does not by itself explain why it happened or identify the effect of a government policy. Definitions and coverage matter as much as the size of a change.

Bay of Plenty was $640 in Jul 2025, a year earlier.

The earliest observation on the same basis was $140 in Feb 1993.
